The Funicular Railway and Victorian Pier as viewed from atop the cliffs at Saltburn by the Sea on vibrant morning in June.
The Funicular Railway (or the Saltburn Cliff Lift), in Saltburn is believed to be the oldest operating Water-balance lift in the whole wide world; although thankfully the cars used to hoist 21st Century passengers up and down the Cliff side have been replaced and refurbished a number of times over the years. The lift was such a tremendous feat of engineering that little else has changed in that time. I am by know means a Victorian Gentlemen but it is certainly true that the mechanism and the interior of the gatehouse, and indeed the ride up and down remain as true to me today as they did when I rode the lift for the first time as a child back in the 1970s. Long may it continue.
