Sony A7R MK 2 Announced

Today sees the news that I have been waiting for all year. Sony has announced the launch of the next generation A7R Mirrorless camera. I have coveted this beast for a long time, having been sold on it by none other than Trey Ratcliff. The image quality and dynamic range that this little camera is capable of is nothing short of ridiculous, however various aspects of its performance have caused me to hold back on buying one. The autofocus system in the first gen model is relatively slow, battery life is poor in comparison to my current DSLR, the camera shutter is prone to vibration at longer focal lengths.

This upgrade has long been rumoured, and there has been plenty of speculation that the A7R 2 would overcome most of these issues and on paper, at least, it sounds very promising. Incredibly promising, in fact. This site isn’t a news outlet and if I’m honest much of the technical stuff is lost on me but I am seriously considering taking the plunge – despite the eye watering launch price of $3200.

Due in August, here are the headlines:

  • 42.4 MP
  • World’s first back-illuminated full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor
  • High sensitivity (expandable up to ISO 102400)
  • High speed AF response up to 40% faster than the original α7R thanks to 399 focal plane phase detection AF points
  • 5-axis image stabilization system borrowed from the acclaimed α7 II
  • 4K Video Capability
  • Silent Shooting

Some of this sounds pretty game changing to me. I know that canon will be shipping their new 5DS R this month, but how many sales will they lose to this? Time will tell and I can’t wait to see the reviews for this. Finger crossed its as good as it sounds.
